What is Massage
Therapy?
Massage therapy is a hands-on
manipulation of the soft tissue and joints of the body. The soft
tissues include muscle, skin, tendons and associated fascia,
ligaments, and join capsules. Massage has many diverse
physiological effects, which are primarily due to the therapist’s
hands moving over the body. The different movements can physically
stretch muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia, encourage the
circulation through the tissue, inhibit muscular spasms, and be
either sedating or stimulating.
Types of Massage
Just like a mechanic has many
different tools, there are different types of massage therapy. The
most commonly used therapies at Five Seasons are:
Swedish Massage – This is the most well known technique and the
basis of much massage work. It is a vigorous system of treatment
designed to energize the body by stimulating circulation. The many
benefits of Swedish massage may include generalized relaxation,
dissolution of scar tissue adhesions, and improved circulation,
which may speed healing and reduce swelling from injury.
Sports Massage – This consists of specific components designed to
reduce injuries, such as alleviating inflammation, and providing a
warm-up for athletes before, during, and after training and
events.
Deep Tissue Therapy – This deep form of work helps to release
myofascial restrictions in the body. It relieves chronic tension,
increases range of motion, and improves posture. Massage to the
connective tissue restores length and flexibility to the fascia,
normalizing the tissue.
Pregnancy Massage – Massage has many physiological benefits
and is very effective in relieving the discomforts and stress of
pregnancy.
Spinal Reflex Analysis (SRA) -
a highly effective neuro-musculoskeletal treatment program for
pain reduction, improved mobility, balanced musculature and
structural decompression.
Attachment Point Therapy (APT)
- is the manual treatment used to relieve symptoms of spinal
reflex syndrome. The goal of the treatment is to release
those muscles that reduce vertebral function and improve mobility,
reduce symptoms, restore normal muscle tone, increase energy and
improve performance.
Muscle Energy Techniques (MET)
- treat dysfunctional patterns in the musculoskeletal system
through a neurological process. MET methods improve tone,
increase strength and range of motion or rehabilitation of
weakened musculature.
